Westport bottom fish

Ed T,   Darryl B, and  Brad M, joined me at Westport on Sunday
The weather conditions were great, flat seas and clear skies.
We started our morning bottom fishing. The  fishing was a bit tougher then I had expected but we kept working at it and were able to pick up nice limits of bottom fish.
By the time we got around to salmon fishing the bite was dead! We saw tons of birds lots of bait and marked lots of fish on the screen but we just could not get them to bite
The word was that there had been a good morning bite that only lasted a short time and the rest of the day had been really slow.

Ilwaco halibut and salmon

We had a four man crew at Ilwaco on Saturday 6-23-12
Ed T, Brad M, Darryl B and myself.
The weather and water conditions were very good on Saturday  no wind and no swell!
We started the morning halibut fishing and I was happy to find that the fishing  was better than I had expected.
Although the currents were very difficult to deal with and  were causing our lines to go all over the place it did not take us long to catch our limits of nice sized halibut .
After a quick gear change    we were on the hunt for salmon.
The flat water  and clear conditions allowed us to search a ton of ground in a hurry.  It did not take us long to find a large flock of birds pounding on  bait.
We dropped our gear in and found plenty of  willing bitters . We had no problems trolling up our limits of both Chinook and Coho but  we were not able to find any of the giants we were hoping for.

Westport Salmon

We had a four man crew at Westport on Sunday 6-17-12
When we launch the boat in the morning there were more boats pulling out then putting in which is never a good sign.
The word  on shore was that the fishing had been slow on Saturday and with a poor weather forecast  for Sunday many people were heading home.
We launched the boat and headed out. The weather was not perfect. Windy,  rainy, choppy but very fishable. We did have a  very rough  bar on our way back in later in the day
We found a nice batch of fish in 50 to 60  feet of water  and had very fast fishing on mid sized Chinook. we were able to easily limit on hatchery Chinook.
Hoochies,  fresh herring, and spoons  all worked very well for us .

Ilwaco Halibut & Salmon

On Saturday 6/16/12  Eric C, Brian S, Bob H and I fished out of Ilwaco for halibut and salmon.
The overall weather conditions were very good   the ocean was nice and flat  no wind, but we did have some fog  and drizzle at times.
We started the morning halibut fishing. The fishing was not hot but we were able to scratch out our limits of nice halibut on fresh bait.
After halibut fishing we went on the hunt for some salmon. We drove all over in search of bait. It took a long time to find it but when we found it we found it!
There was lots of bait and lots of fish. We had fast action  on mid sized Chinook,  and were even able to hook one quad!
We had  our best luck on hoochies, fresh herring, and spoons.
For those traveling from out of town Monte square in Montesano  now has fresh bait for people that call their orders in the day before (bait is delivered by river bend jigs & bait)

Westport Salmon and bottom fish

Cory B, Pete k, and myself fished Westport on Sunday 6-10-12
It was a great day to be on the water. The ocean was flat calm and there was almost  no wind.
There was tons of bait and tons of fish . we had fast action on medium sized fish and were able to limit very easily
We caught our fish on a combination of herring and hoochies but it seemed the herring was working slightly better.
The marked rate was very good for us this weekend we caught mostly hatchery Chinook which was great since that’s all that was open.
The fishing was very good for this early in the year and I expect the salmon fishing to just keep getting better as the year goes on!

After picking up our six hatchery Chinook we switched gears and jigged up our limits of nice sized black rock fish.

I can’t wait to get back out on the water again!

Ilwaco Halibut 6-9-12

We had a four man crew at ilwaco on Saturday Ed T, Pete K, Jason A,  and myself.
The fishing pressure was very light on Saturday, we did not see another boat all day
Fishing conditions were very difficult to say the least!
The water was a bit churned up out there and the currents were causing all kinds of issues with our line angles. I have never seen it so hard to keep a decent line angle.
Despite the difficult conditions the fishing was very good. We were able to easily limit on nice sized halibut using a combination of jigs and bait. Good quality fresh bait accounted  for the majority of our fish.

Neah Bay halibut & lings May 31 - june 2

Wow another great week of bottom fishing up a Neah bay !
I was joined by Aaron L, Mark H, and  Rob L
The overall weather was good this weekend but the wind did kick up a bit at times
The fish really  seemed to be on the biting  this weekend
We had great results on just about everything  we sent down  jigs, grubs, bait, darts, twin tails  and anything else we could think of.
We fished hard all four days and were able to catch some  trophy class fish
A special thanks to all the people at Big Salmon and the rest of Neah bay for  the great hospitality which made a great trip even better.
It looks like it's time to dust off my salmon gear.

The wolf eel was released unharmed the rest of the fish were not so lucky
