Ilwaco tuna 8-27-11 & 8-28-11

I tuna fished  out of ilwaco Saturday and Sunday August 27 & 28. We had a five man crew both days.
On Saturday the water was a little choppy but not bad. There was a lot of good sine out there. Lots of marks, lots of birds, good water temp and good water color but we were having a hard time getting them to come up.
We hooked 10 fish on the troll and landed 6 but we just could not get a bait stop going. On Sunday conditions were very good calm seas and not much wind but the morning bite was very slow the bite picked up in the after noon and we ended up hooking  twenty two fish but were only able to
get 16 in the box Our best results came 50 miles south west of ilwaco
I expect to hear some great reports in the next few weeks.

Ilwaco tuna & Westport salmon / bottom fish 8-21-11

I fished ilwaco on Saturday  8-20-11 and Westport on Sunday 8-21-11
We had a five man crew both days I was joined by Chuck G, Scott P, ROB S, Tom W, and Pete
On Saturday the conditions were very poor!  Windy and  very rough!  we worked our way 55nm south west and found a nice little patch of fish. we hooked 10 and landed 8 tuna  all on the troll. Due to the conditions it was almost imposable to fish with live bait. And due to our slow run speed back up hill we had to leave  the prime area just shortly after arriving there. I have no doubt that we could have loaded our boxes if conditions would have been better.

On Sunday we headed to Westport. The water was flat calm but it was very foggy most of the day. the salmon fishing was a little on the slow side but there were still a few nice fish around.
we worked hard and scrached up our limits of 10 salmon . We had our best results straight out in 400 feet of water with 120 feet of wire out  on the riggers. We also were able to jig up our limits of lingcod and a very nice batch of yellow tail rock fish

westport 8-13-11 & 8-14-11 kings lings tuna and more

I fished Westport on Saturday and Sunday august 13 and 14. The fishing was great!
I  could not have ask for better weather. Not to hot, not too cold and flat calm!
We had a five man crew both days. I was joined this weekend by Scott P,  Don C, Jason A, Matt S and Sean J.
We started off salmon fishing Saturday morning  and fishing was awesome! we had fast  action on  big kings
It was big king after big king  and we were a able to easily limit on them.
Next  it was on to lingcod.  The lings were really on the bite! we were able to jig up quick limits of nice lings in no time.
With time left in the day and flat water we pointed the boat south west and were on the hunt for  tuna.
It did not  take us long  to find a  nice  patch of 64 deg blue water  with jumping bait. we worked that area till we ran out of time and were able   to hook a dozen  tuna on a mix of swim baits, live bait and x-raps. The darker colors seemed to be working best.
On Sunday it was back after the salmon but with a new set of rules, only one  king.
Sunday's salmon fishing was much slower but still good. We were able to troll up our limits of both nice kings and silvers but unfortunately we did not have enough time left for tuna so we did a little recon on some new bottom fish holes. We found a massive school of yellow tail  that was so thick that we could not drop throw it without catching fish. the school was over.3 miles long . it was the biggest school of rock fish I have ever seen.
With 50 yellow tail in the the boat we were back after the lings. We scratch around a bit before we hit the right drift and limited with a good batch of lings.
My over all feel for this weekend was the king fishing was very good and there were some massive kings being caught.  Most of our salmon were caught in the top 60 feet on hoochies and  herring. The largest salmon that I herd of and was able to confirm  at the dock  was 49 pounds. Silver fishing was slow but there were a few hatchery silvers around if you were willing to work at it.
The bottom fishing was great and the tuna fishing was slow to ok. Can’t wait to hear about more of those big kings!

Westport Lings and Salmon 8-6-11 & 8-7-11

Mike L, Eric C, Rob S,  jason A ,and I fished Westport on Saturday 8-6-11 and Sunday 8-7-11
On Saturday there was a good salmon bite early with a nice mix of kings ,pinks, and silvers but by about 10 am the bite slowed and  the salmon fishing became tough. After a couple hours of slow salmon fishing we switched gears to bottom fishing.
The lingcod fishing was great! Lots of fish and plenty of big ones!
On Sunday we were back after the salmon and the bite was off!
It was scratch fishing, with slow reports across the fleet. After a few hours of  slow salmon fishing we went back after the bottom fish.
The ling cod fishing was smoking hot!   Tons of fish and lots of big ones.  Our two biggest of the day were 30 & 32 pounds. After we limited on lings we headed back to the salmon grounds were we found a huge school of birds pounding the water and no one around. We dropped our gear in and it did not take long before we had doubles on. we were able to call  a few friends over and we enjoyed the good fishing for about 1 ½ hours. we  hooked some doubles and even one triple before the birds disappeared and the fishing slowed again.
The over all feel for this weekend was the salmon fishing was slow but there were some very nice fish being caught . The tuna reports were very slow and the bottom fishing was super hot.
