CR Tuna & Salmon

I fished with Team defiance on Friday  8-24-12 for the OTC . We left from ilwaco and it didn’t take us long to find the fish we caught 68 tuna. most were on live bait but we also caught a few on the troll. The overall fishing was very good but due to a motor issue we were unable to make the weigh in.
On Sunday Dave B and I joined Pat D on the Columbia for some salmon fishing out of Chinook the overall fishing was a bit on the slow side but we kept at it and were able to find a few  nice fish.

Westport Tuna 8-11-12

We had a five man crew at Westport this weekend 8-11-12  &  8-12-12
I was joined by  Ed T,  Cory B,  Brian S and Jacob B
Although the bar conditions were excellent and there was only a  small swell The overall weather conditions were poor due to strong winds and 5 feet of chop.
Despite the poor water conditions the tuna fishing was great. we caught 42 tuna on Saturday. We landed  about half of our fish on the troll and the other half on live bait.
The fish seemed very aggressive on both the troll and live bait
I have no doubt that if weather conditions would have been better we would have had some epic bait stops!

On Sunday we  switched gears and went after salmon . The salmon fishing was very poor on Sunday we managed to scrap up a few but overall it was some of the worst salmon fishing I had seen at Westport. There were a few nice kings being caught in 15 to 40 feet of water both north and south along the beach  and a few silvers out in 260+ feet of water but there did not seem to be any huge concentrations of salmon anywhere near Westport.  After starting the morning fishing the beach we searched all over off shore  on Sunday but were not able to find any of the large schools of bait we were looking for.

Sullivan Lake August 3, 2012

I spent the weekend at my family reunion  in Pierz Minnesota, I did manage to get a few hours of fishing in at nearby Sullivan lake.
We caught a mix of northern pike and sunfish. We had our best results on Northerns throwing spinner baits, but we also caught a few on leeches and night crawlers.
The overall weather conditions were good 80’s and sunny with  a few cloud patches. The winds were  calm  most of  the morning with about a 10kt breeze at times.
There was a noticeable amount of dead loss in the lake form the resent heat in the days before but the overall fishing seemed to be pretty good.

105 Westport tuna!

Wow what a great weekend of fishing!

A special  thanks  and congratulations to team defiance for leading us to the fish and for winning the ilwaco derby  in the process with a 10 fish weight of 258.9 pounds and the big fish of the derby a 39.15 pound monster. Way to go guys!

Mike L, Eric C, Steve E, Brad M, and I headed to Westport with as much ice as we could haul and it was a good thing we did!
The water was flat calm and the fish were on the bite both Saturday and Sunday
On Saturday we had a very good start to the morning, the fishing died in the afternoon, but we were still able to end the day with 45 fish in the box
On Sunday the fishing was even better. The bite was  good  most of the day but the morning and evening bites were definitely the best. We ended the day with an even 60 fish in the boat and a total of 105 for the weekend
We caught  most of our fish on live bait but we also had success trolling x-raps , cedar plugs and casting swim baits
It looks like it is going to be a great Summer!

Westport tuna July 21 & 22

We had a five man crew at Westport   July 21st  and 22nd
The overall weather  and water condition were good but the bar was a bit bumpy on Sunday
We fished hard and were rewarded with nice batches of tuna both Saturday and Sunday
x-raps were working best for us on the troll but live bait accounted for most of our fish.

Neah Bay kings July 14th & 15th

Chuck G, Cory B, Don C and myself fished Neah bay this weekend
Although the fishing in the straights and along the shore line has slowed, we  were able to find some great salmon fishing off shore on the Canadian  side this weekend
Saturday  was very foggy which made for a slow run out in the morning but the fog burned off in the afternoon and the overall  weather was very nice.
On Sunday we had some very large swells  combined with some strong currents which made for some very rough conditions at times
The salmon fishing was smoking hot for us this weekend we caught lots and lots of salmon. The king bite was very good in the mornings till around 1OAM and again in the evenings and the silver fishing was smoking hot  throughout the whole day. There were tons of fish out there this weekend, we could see the salmon cursing on the surface all  day.
We had lots of doubles , many triples and even a few quads, At times the fishing could not have got any faster.
We had our best results trolling  spoons and bucktails in the top 70 feet of water.
The limit  at Neah bay dropped to one king per day as of today but I expect both the king and silver fishing will continue to be very good for the next few weeks.

Neah bay kings, lings, & halibut july 7 & 8

We had a four man crew at Neah bay this weekend July 7 & 8,  2012.
I was joined by my dad Chuck G, Greg M, and Joe D.
The overall weather and water conditions were good this weekend. Overcast in the mornings , sunny in the afternoons and not much wind.
we spent our weekend fishing the Canadian side and had great results, limits of salmon, lings, and halibut both days.
The reports were that the salmon fishing was good both near the beach and off shore but  we spent all of our time off shore
We had fast action on mid grade kings and silvers  and did hear of a few hogs being caught. The biggest king I heard of  was 42 pounds.

Our ling fishing was not as fast as our salmon fishing but still good and we were able to find a few really big ones.

The halibut fishing was better than I had expected with steady action on midsized fish with a couple bigger ones mixed in.

I expect  the  great fishing  at Neah bay  to just keep  getting better as the season progresses.
