We had a five man tuna crew at Westport this weekend

The overall weather conditions were very good this weekend
Other than a very rough and foggy bar crossing Saturday night the rest of the weekend was nice and smooth.

Our overall  fishing was very good we boated 63 tuna and had several other opportunities

On Saturday there was a very good troll and bait bite, but on Sunday the troll bite had slowed a bit but there were still plenty of willing biters on the bait.





 

 

Westport Tuna

The weather was great at Westport this weekend flat calm and almost no wind

Our overall results for the weekend were very good but we had to work at it a bit.
We ended the weekend with 84 tuna. There seemed to be lots of tuna around this weekend but they seemed to be a bit skittish.
On Saturday we got 62 tuna, most of our fish came on live bait but we also had a good troll bite. On Sunday we  got 22, it was mainly singles on the troll  and singles  on iron and bait. Most of the fish we were marking were in the top 25 feet of water and seemed very lethargic when taking the bait.

 

 

TIME TO BREAK OUT THE BIG GEAR!

We had a five man crew at Westport this weekend Mike L, Corey B. Eric C and my self  . The overall fishing conditions were very good . The water was nice and flat with almost no wind.

We fished tuna both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday we had to work a bit for our fish. Our day consisted of mainly singles on the troll and very few bait fish. We did get five troll fish at one time but even then we could not get a good bait bite going.  We stuck with it and ended the day with28 tuna with our biggest being a very nice 36 pounder.

Sunday  we caught most of our fish on live bait.  We were well on our way to having a very good day and already had 55 tuna in the boat when it happened. One of our troll rods went off. It was A heavy duty 5’6 rod with a Penn 114 filled with  80lb power pro with  5 feet of  150lb mono leader crimped to a mag 20 x-rap. We could tell right away this was a good fish but we did not expect the fight we ended up getting!  Rob grabbed the rod and the fish spent the next 10  minutes stripping line off the real! The rod was passed to Mike, I did a quick drag check and tightened it down a bit but the fish did not seem to mind one bit in fact it spent the next 2 hours pulling out drag none stop; He would take  ¾ of the spool and we would run after him to get it back then he would take  ¾ of the spool and we would run back up on him to get some line back.

Once in a while the fish would dive all the way to the bottom then he would head back up near the top. After the  two hour mark we really cranked down the drag! And the fish continued to strip out the line but after another ½ hour he began to slow down  this was the first sine that we might have a chance to land the fish. Slower and slow he got till we could stop the fish for a  second by holding the line. 1 or 2 seconds at first then 5  or 10 seconds as the fight went on. we knew we were wearing it down but were  still unable to move the fish at all! At the three hour mark we believe the fish died. The fish started dropping straight down and we could not stop it the weight of the fish alone even throw we believe it was dead was too much for us the gain line or even hold in place so  we put the boat in gear and tried to plane him up and it worked We got to the point where the drag was no longer coming off the real and now we teamed up on it. Mike worked the real and I hand lined it in inch by inch. Sometimes  We would gain 6 to 8 inches per swell  other times we would lose a foot or two but we were  finally making some progress we spent the next hour  slowly working the fish in. We had more than ¾ of the line back on the real and we were feeling pretty good about our chances  of getting it to the boat.  I was quite happy that it was dead and we would not be trying to deal with a live beat when we got it to the boat. We had the deck cleared and all the gaffs and harpoons ready but it never got to that point we figured we had less then ½hour left till we would have seen it but the line snapped at the tip of the rod.  After 4 hours 10 minutes it was all over. we could see a large mass on the sonar just 150 feet down.  We will never know for sure what it was but I have my ideas. When the line snapped not a word was said we knew we had done everything we could have. we  headed for the cab and started our run back in, we reached Westport well after dark but at least we had cleaned all  55 of our tuna during the battle.

 

 

Hot king bite at La Push!

The king fishing at La push was hot this weekend! We caught nice king after nice king.

It was some of the best king fishing I have ever seen.
At one point we trolled for 3 ½ miles and caught good kings  the whole time.
We had lots of doubles and quit a few triples
The kings were very deep this weekend we had our best results running  380 feet of wire on the riggers. We used a four rod rotation on two downriggers and it worked great. By the time we had the first fish to the boat we would already have our gear back down and would often have the second fish on the same rigger before the first  fish was unhooked.
We had our best luck on hoochies and bucktails but the fishing was so good we never tried anything else!
We also did some near shore fishing for bottom fish and we did not have any trouble catching our limits.

 



 

 

La Push Salmon 7-28-13

We fished out of La Push july 28^th and 29^th   The overall weather was good.  It was a bit bumpy on the ride out Sunday morning but Monday was flat calm.

The overall fishing was very good we had very fast action on silvers and pinks  but had to work a bit for the kings
The silvers and pinks were thick in the top two hundred feet and our best king action was coming at 250 feet  down
The pinks and silvers seemed to be hitting  everything we tried, while hoochies seem to be working best for the bigger kings.
On Monday we also made a quick stop by the rocks on the way in and were able to pick up quick limits of rock fish and a hand full of lings.

 

 

 

Neah Bay Kings, Silvers, & Pinks

I fished out of Neah Bay  july 20 &21 on board the  knuckle buster  (21 foot parker ) with my friends Rob S and Brian S.

The overall weather and water conditions were very good. Over cast and cool with a slight breeze most of the weekend.

The off shore salmon fishing was very good both days. On Saturday we had quick action on silvers and pinks but had to work hard for our kings.

On Sunday  the kings were biting much better for us, we  had hot action for kings, silvers and pinks. We had our  best king fishing  at 225 feet on the riggers but we also caught a few nice kings on the surface rods. The silvers and pinks were thick in the top 75 feet of water and were hitting almost everything. We caught our kings on a combination of herring , bucktails and hoochies with most of

our bigger fish caught on the hoochies.

 

 

 

 

 

Westport tuna and salmon

On Saturday 7-13- 13  I jumped on  board  Happy daze with Dave J, Andy M, and Jim for my first tuna trip of the year.

The overall conditions were good but the wind did kick up a bit in the after noon

The tuna fishing was very good we caught 43 tuna and the average size was very nice also. We were able to catch some fish on clones, spreader bars,  x raps, and swim baits but most of our fish were caught on live bait.

On Sunday I switched gears and went salmon fishing on the Relentless with Mark A , Jacob A, Dave B and Cory B.

The overall salmon fishing was good but not great. The kings were much easier for us  to find then the silvers but we worked  hard at it and were able to  came back  in with our limits of both  kings and hatchery silvers.

We did our best on a combination of herring and buck tails trolled in the top 100 feet  in  140 to 180 feet of water The morning and evening bites seemed to be the best with the middle of the day a bit on the slow side.
