Wide open Labor day tuna at Westport

We saw a little bit of everything this weekend!
On Saturday the conditions were perfect nice flat water and no wind lots of birds and we were marking bait and fish everywhere but the overall fishing was very slow. The fishing started off good  on both the  troll  and bait  but quickly died. By mid-morning it was dead and stayed slow for us most of the day. we slowly pick up a fish here and there on the troll and a few on bait and finished the day with a very respectable 24 tuna considering how poor the bite was. The water was flat calm and we did not see any jumpers all day

Sunday  we headed back to the  same area, there were lots of birds and bait and we were marking tuna everywhere but we had a hard time getting  them to hit. The water was flat calm again and we did not see any jumpers all day! The morning  bite was dead, mid-morning  we started picking up a few here and there and around 2 pm they really went on the  bite. They were hitting our troll rods and bait very well for a couple hours before the bite died  around 4pm. We ended the day with 30 tuna

On Monday we went back to the same  area for the third day, after a nice ride out the wind  picked up quickly and the weather got pretty nasty, But the fishing was awesome!  The bite was wide open most  of the day. The fish were biting very well on both the troll and the live bait. Our best troll results were on x raps, cedar plugs, and swim baits. The birds and sharks were a big problem on the  live bait but we were able to add more weight to our lines to reduce most of our problems.

By mid-day  our bait died and the wind and  waves were making it difficult to troll but the fish did not mind one bit they just kept on biting! It was difficult to see out of the windows  due to the waves but I could see some birds just ahead of us and then I noticed a huge school of tuna! they were so thick and tightly packed that I could see about 100 of them out of the water at one time ( it looked like salmon packed into a hatchery pen) we only had one rod out at this point so we throw out whatever we could as fast as we could and all four rods  hooked up.
We finished the day with an amazing 72 tuna.
